What is your website?

Your domain is enough.

Medical SEO is search optimisation for brands marketing regulated medical products or services. Beyond standard technical and content work, it requires accurate handling of drug indications, off-label claim boundaries, FDA and FTC advertising rules, and state-level prescribing constraints that vary across the markets a brand serves.

01

The claim boundary is a ranking issue, not just a legal one

The fastest way to lose a page in this category is to say a drug treats something it is not indicated for.

Compounded semaglutide is not Wegovy. Oral minoxidil is not the same recommendation as topical. A peptide sold for research use has a specific legal framing that marketing copy routinely breaks. Writers without medical review get these wrong constantly, not through carelessness but because the distinctions are genuinely fine.

Search engines increasingly reflect these distinctions. Pages that overreach on claims underperform pages that state the indication precisely, because the more accurate page is the one that matches what a careful evaluator would endorse.

02

Architecture for regulated catalogues

Prescription-led brands accumulate structural problems that general ecommerce sites do not: state availability pages, condition pages, protocol pages, product pages that vary by dose and by pharmacy type, and eligibility content that changes as licensure expands.

Done badly, this produces hundreds of near-duplicate URLs competing with each other. Done well, it produces a crawlable hierarchy where each page owns exactly one search intent and internal links move authority to the pages that convert.

Most of the technical work we do at this scale is consolidation rather than creation.

03

Where the claim line sits

The difference between a page that ranks and a page that does not is often a single qualifier. These are the distinctions we correct most often in regulated health content.

OverreachingAccurateWhy it matters
Compounded semaglutide is WegovyCompounded semaglutide is prepared under a different regulatory pathway to FDA-approved WegovyImplying equivalence to an approved product is both a compliance exposure and a quality signal problem
Dutasteride treats hair lossDutasteride is used off-label for hair loss in most marketsOff-label use is legitimate; presenting it as an approved indication is not
This peptide improves recoveryThis product is sold for research use only and is not for human consumptionResearch-use framing governs every sentence, not just the footer

When I am asked if I know of anyone in the SEO space, without hesitation I point them to DTC SEO. They truly understand the power of authority content, onsite metrics, and strategic backlinking and has the network to put it into play.

Medical SEO: what founders ask us

What is medical SEO?

Medical SEO is search optimisation for brands marketing regulated medical products or services. Beyond standard technical and content work, it requires accurate handling of drug indications, off-label language, FDA and FTC claim rules, and state prescribing constraints.

How is it different from healthcare SEO?

The terms overlap heavily and are often used interchangeably. Where a distinction exists, medical SEO leans toward prescription and clinical contexts, while healthcare SEO covers the broader category including wellness and supplement brands.

Can compounded medications be marketed in search?

Yes, with precision. Compounded preparations sit under a different regulatory framework to FDA-approved branded drugs, and content must reflect the 503A and 503B distinction accurately rather than implying equivalence to the branded product.

How do we handle off-label content?

State the off-label framing explicitly rather than omitting it. Off-label prescribing is legitimate and common, but content presenting an off-label use as an approved indication creates exposure and underperforms the more precise version in search.

Does state licensure need its own content?

Usually yes, but as data rather than as pages. One page per state generated from a single source of truth, each carrying genuinely state-specific prescribing information. Dozens of near-identical pages risk being classified as doorway content.

Who reviews the content?

A licensed physician reviews every page for clinical accuracy before it goes live. Our reviewer is Samuel Sarmiento, MD, MPH, MBA, a Mayo Clinic-trained surgeon and NBC News medical journalism fellow.
