COMPETITOR TEARDOWN

Nutrafol: 392,800 visits and almost no category presence

The most recognised hair supplement brand in the US, ranking for 1,528 keywords. What happens when a brand builds demand and then rents the search results back.

Step 1 of 5

What is your website?

Your domain is enough.

Nutrafol draws 392,800 monthly organic visits in the US from just 1,528 ranking keywords. That ratio, roughly 257 visits per keyword, is the signature of a brand-only search footprint. They run 4,911 paid keywords against those 1,528 organic ones, and their largest non-branded commercial term carries 600 searches a month.

01

The numbers that do not fit together

A domain drawing 392,800 monthly visits would normally rank for tens of thousands of keywords. Nutrafol ranks for 1,528.\n\nThat is not a small number because the site is small. It is small because almost all of the traffic arrives on the brand name. People search Nutrafol, having heard about it somewhere else, and the site is there to catch them.

The numbers that do not fit together
MetricOrganicPaid
Monthly visits392,800225,787
Monthly value$758,503$448,748
Keywords1,5284,911
Keywords in the top 3938

Read the keyword row twice. They are bidding on three times more keywords than they rank for. The paid programme is not supporting the organic one, it is standing in for it.\n\nThat works while brand demand keeps growing. It stops working the moment brand spend pauses, because there is no category position underneath to catch the searcher who does not yet know the name.

02

The commercial demand they hold is tiny

Filtering to non-branded keywords with commercial or transactional intent and a CPC above $2.50 gives the demand a competitor actually fights over. On most domains this list runs to thousands of terms. Here is Nutrafol's, in full, at the top end.

The commercial demand they hold is tiny

hair pills for women30045$3.35815
postpartum hair loss supplements15022$3.00110
supplements for postpartum hair loss15012$3.0916

The largest term on this list carries 600 searches a month and they sit at position 14 on it. The terms they do own, postpartum hair loss supplements at 150 searches, are real but they are rounding errors against a 392,800 visit domain.\n\nFor context, the hair loss category has terms at 492,000, 311,000 and 164,000 searches a month. Nutrafol appears on none of them in any position worth counting.

03

Why this is the most common failure in supplements

Nutrafol is not badly run. They built a brand faster than almost anyone in the category, and the search results reflect exactly that: enormous branded demand, no category footprint.\n\nThe problem is what it costs at the point where brand growth slows. Every non-branded search in hair loss, and there are millions a month, resolves to somebody else. When a competitor publishes the ingredient comparison, the postpartum guide or the men's supplement breakdown, they get the searcher who has not yet decided, and Nutrafol gets them only after that searcher has been convinced somewhere else.\n\nThe second problem is enterprise value. Branded demand is not a transferable asset in the way a category position is. A buyer looking at 392,800 monthly visits will discount heavily once they see that 1,528 keywords sit behind it, because that traffic follows the brand spend rather than the domain.

04

Where the flank is open

Everything except the brand name.\n\nThe ingredient layer is the obvious start. Supplement buyers search actives before they search brands, and nobody in this category is answering those queries with clinical seriousness. That is the same argument our supplement playbook makes and Nutrafol's footprint is the proof of the gap.\n\nThe demographic layer is the second. Postpartum hair loss, hair thinning in women over 40, and hair loss during menopause are all underserved relative to their volume, and Nutrafol holds only the smallest terms in that set.\n\nThe third is comparison. A brand this well known is searched against alternatives constantly, and those comparison queries are winnable by anyone prepared to publish an honest, sourced answer. The incumbent almost never writes them, because writing them means naming competitors.

When I am asked if I know of anyone in the SEO space, without hesitation I point them to DTC SEO. They truly understand the power of authority content, onsite metrics, and strategic backlinking and has the network to put it into play.

Brand demand is not a transferable asset

Tell us where you are and we will map the category position that survives a pause in ad spend.

Step 1 of 5

Where this leads

Methodology: Ahrefs Site Explorer, nutrafol.com including subdomains. Ahrefs, organic keywords and site metrics, subdomains mode. United States. 1 August 2026. Figures are the Ahrefs export on that date and are not adjusted. CPC values are converted from the API's cents to dollars.

Nutrafol: what founders ask us

How much of Nutrafol's traffic is branded?

Effectively almost all of it. 392,800 monthly visits arrive against just 1,528 ranking keywords, which is roughly 257 visits per keyword. Their largest non-branded commercial term carries 600 searches a month and they rank 14th on it.

Is Nutrafol beatable on SEO?

On the brand name, no. On the category, they are barely present. The hair loss category has head terms at 492,000, 311,000 and 164,000 searches a month and Nutrafol does not hold a meaningful position on any of them.

Why do they run more paid keywords than organic ones?

4,911 paid keywords against 1,528 organic. The paid programme is standing in for a category position rather than supporting one, which works while brand demand grows and stops working the moment that spend pauses.

What would you build first against them?

The ingredient layer and the demographic layer. Supplement buyers search actives before brands, and postpartum, perimenopausal and over-40 hair thinning are all underserved relative to their volume.

Where did these numbers come from?

A single Ahrefs Site Explorer export for nutrafol.com including subdomains, United States, taken on 1 August 2026. Nothing is adjusted, rounded or estimated.
